ABOUT

This Rwandese women’s cooperative are masters of a delicate, incredibly fine style of weaving from the time of Kings in Rwanda. The weaving is done with a very thin natural fiber, a relative of Papyrus, that grows only in Rwanda.  It takes three months to complete a 6” tall basket.

The cooperative collaborated with an Italian jewelry designer to use the ancient style of weaving to make contemporary jewelry. The tin settings are handcast by a different cooperative in the South of Rwanda.  It takes a minimum of four days to weave the pendant piece for the necklace.

The cooperative meets five days a week in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. They are some of the remaining few artisans keeping this high quality art form alive.
